Jim Bathurst

If you’re not familiar with Jim, he’s been part of the Nerd Fitness community for ages (Headmaster at Camp Nerd Fitness for three years!). His credentials are just absurd, but let’s first look a bit at his history.

Prior to joining Team NF, Jim worked as a Personal Trainer for over a decade in Washington DC, winning “Best Personal Trainer in DC” from the CityPaper. He was also CrossFit Director for CrossFit Foggy Bottom, where he won “Best CrossFit Gym in DC” his first year as Director, for the awesome and supportive community he established.

In college, he was a member of Gymkana, a gymnastics club where he learned how to do regular college-y things, like crazy handstands on tall stacks of chairs and flipping through hoops of fire.

From that love of gymnastics in college, he founded the online site Beast Skills, where he specialized in tutorials for advanced bodyweight skills. He was requested to give gymnastic seminars internationally for his experience. He’s the guy who taught Steve Kamb how to do his first muscle up years ago!

He has competed (and coached) in Powerlifting, Olympic lifting, CrossFit, and Grip – and he even ran Cross Country and Track for 12 seasons in high school, as well as several 40 mile races. He’s done it all!

His vast experience is reflected in his certifications:

  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the NSCA
  • Precision Nutrition Level 1
  • USA Weightlifting Sport Performance Coach (USAW)
  • CrossFit Level 1
  • Functional Range Conditioning (FRC)
  • Adaptive Athletes Certification

He’s the ultimate super-human trainer wrapped up in a ridiculously nerdy package. Want to know what it’s like to work with Coach Jim? Have a look at two of his clients’ success stories here and here!

Speaking of nerdy, we had to ask Jim a few questions…

Star Wars or Lord of the Rings?

J: LOTR! I read the Hobbit (and made a sword with Elfish runes on it) years before I saw my first Star Wars film, so the stories will always hold a special place in my heart.

Favorite video game of all time?

J: Whew, well the first one that completely hooked me to video games was Metroid. Next was probably the original Dragon Warrior. But if we’re talking about good times with friends, it has to be GoldenEye 64 or Bomberman!!

If you could have any superpower in the world, what would it be, and why?

J: Flight! I love travel, and get impatient when it takes forever to get somewhere.
